A work by Bali’s younger generation for the people of Bali and Indonesia, this film unveils the story of the National Hero, I Gusti Ngurah Rai. The production of a film about I Gusti Ngurah Rai is not new. In total, six previous attempts have been made, all ending in failure. Large sums of money were spent but with no results. The last attempt occurred in the early 1990s and reached the shooting stage with a significant budget for that time.

In 2012, during the seventh attempt, the idea of making a film about this great Balinese figure resurfaced in the minds of AA. Nanik Suryani, IGAA. Bintang Aryani , and Cok Sawitri. After an extended research period of nearly nine months by Cok Sawitri, the search for a director concluded with the appointment of Dodid Wijanarko, a young director with extensive experience in documentary filmmaking.

The one-week filming process took place at several locations in Bali, including the Sangeh Nature Reserve, Puri Carangsari, Puri Kesiman, Lembeng Beach, the Office of the Proclamation Devotion Foundation, Pura Dalam Basa, the Ayung River, Margarana Heroes Memorial Park, and other sites. It was a unique experience for both the cast and crew, most of whom were Balinese. This became a point of pride in the making of the film about this heroic figure. “All of the actors are young people from Bali, and about 80 percent of the crew are also Balinese,” said Dodid. He did this intentionally to introduce Indonesian films while encouraging the next generation of local youth to love Indonesian cinema, ensuring that filmmaking wasn’t solely concentrated in Jakarta or Java. A standout scene involved a fight sequence performed without stunt doubles, carried out by Balinese youths from the PSPS Bakti Negara Ranting Lalang Bhuana Bangli martial arts school.

This docudrama, blending historical values with popular culture, depicts the love story and the struggle of I Gusti Ngurah Rai and his troops in their battle against the Dutch from 1942 to 1947. They embarked on a “long march” around the island of Bali for several days. The use of video and photo footage enriched the docudrama’s storytelling. Visual effects, created by Tiga-D—a production house based in Bangli and known for its work on The Lord of the Rings—added further enhancement to the film.

The resistance and final days of I Gusti Ngurah Rai are brought to life with a musical score skillfully composed by Ayu Laksmi, with contributions from Eko Wicaksono, Ketut Rico Mantrawan, Gede Yudhana, and other Balinese artists. The film also involved Yoichi Ikeda, a sound engineer from Japan, and Helga Seldi, a Hungarian violinist, in the musical arrangement.
